Ecole d’optométrie de l’université de Montréal and the Academy of Ophthalmic Education (AOE) are presenting a 100-Hour Therapeutic Pharmaceutical Agent Review Course. Our course includes approximately 80 hours of didactics through hybrid, synchronous and asynchronous formats and approximately 20 hours of in-person practical hands-on workshops at Ecole d’optométrie de l’université de Montréal in Montreal, Quebec.
Our course is designed for UK optometrists that need to complement their local TPA education requirements.* Upon successful completion of the course, an official certificate from Ecole d’optométrie de l’université de Montréal will be issued. FORAC accepted the same TPA program delivered in 2022 as adequate training for admission to the IGOEE.

- General and ocular pharmacologic principles review
- Topical anesthetics, mydriatics and cycloplegics

Anterior Segment
- Infectious disease anterior segment (bacterial, viral)
- Infectious disease anterior segment (fungal, STD, etc.)
- Inflammatory diseases (allergic eye disease)
- Lumps, bumps and dermatologic disorders (R/O orbital masses)
- Corneal dystrophies
- Complications of contact lens wear
- Pharmaceutical management of myopia
- Ocular surface foreign body removal
- Ocular surface disease diagnosis and management
- Pre- and post-operative management and complications (anterior segment, lasik)
- Pre- and post-operative management and complications (anterior segment, cataracts)
- Anterior segment clinical grand rounds

Clinical/Practical Sessions
(In-Person at the University Clinic at Ecole d’optométrie de l’université de Montréal)
- Anterior segment procedures (topography, biometry, specular, microscopy, aberrometry, etc.)
- Dry eye procedures (lipiview, keratography, osmometry, lipiflow, D&I/punctum plugs, etc.)
- Vitreoretina (fundus lenses, binocular indirect ophthalmoscopy, scleral indentation)
- Glaucoma (imaging, gonioscopy and visual fields)
- Auxiliary testing
- FB removal, ocular rinsing, blood pressure, head/neck exams, glucometry, etc.
Final Exam at the Completion of the 100-Hour Course
- Completion requires the successful passing of a final theory MCQ exam and practical assessment
- If unsuccessful, a single repeat theory exam is possible (subject to a fee)
- There is no option for a retake of the practical assessment, until the next iteration of the course
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA AND APPLICATION SUBMISSION
- Optometry degree from a recognized UK institution
- Qualified and certified to practice using Diagnostic Pharmaceutical Agents (WCO competency level 3 with diagnostics)
- Actively practicing optometry and seeing patients on a regular basis (pre-reg. optometrists will be considered)
- Able to complete the course in English. This requires competency in listening, reading, writing and speaking (as a guide, equivalent to IELTS 5.5 – modest to competent user)
- Able to do approximately 8-12 hours per week of online course work over the duration of the theoretical component of the course, on evenings and weekends
- Willing and able to complete the practical aspects of the TPAC, which entails approximately 20 hours of supervised practical activities on weekends at l'universite de Montreal
- Able to participate in online learning with access to internet and computing facilities to undertake the coursework and participate in webinars

Course may be cancelled at any time due to insufficient enrolment. Course start date is scheduled to be announced (anticipated to start April 2025). Courses will be hybrid, synchronous and asynchronous formats with pre-recorded lectures with faculty to student support and hands-on workshops at the University of Montreal (dates to be announced). Programs and speakers are subject to change without notice. Registrants are responsible for their own travel, lodging and other expenses for the workshops taking place in Montreal.
