Visual-Vestibular Therapy: Post-Concussion Management

Dizziness is one of the most common post-concussion symptoms reported in both the acute and chronic stages following injury. This lecture aims to explore a strategy for assessing and treating post-concussive dizziness in the optometric setting to help the symptomatic patient re-establish effective sensory integration of visual, vestibular and somatosensory processing required for equilibrium. The evaluation and therapeutic techniques presented are easily accessible to the practicing optometrist. Special attention is paid to progressive programming and loading designed for this specific patient population and their unique symptomatology.

This lecture serves to introduce imperative aspects of optometry’s role in improving and optimizing youth, amateur and professional athlete’s performance. This course will cover basic to advanced topics from sports vision evaluations to vision training for performance enhancement, including considerations when evaluating the concussed athlete. The key differences in working with youth, amateur and professional athletes will be discussed in depth, as they are important considerations when optimizing sports performance through an optometrist’s lens.
