PROGRAM AT A GLANCE
Prisms: Compensatory and Therapeutic Applications
Dr. Patrick Quaid, Optometrist, FCOVD, PhD

In this lecture, Dr. Quaid will outline the vital importance of understanding prisms and their use in cases of diplopia and asthenopia/eyestrain and in cases of traumatic brain injury/post-concussion syndrome. He will highlight key visual skills, ‘other than simple 20/20 acuity,’ such as tracking skills, visual memory skills and vergence/accommodation functional skills. The myth of ‘20/20’ being adequate will also be discussed. Videos of real-life cases will also be shown, something that Dr.Quaid insists on being included in all his lectures to really make the messages in his lectures ‘human.’ Exactly how prisms are prescribed will be discussed from a compensatory standpoint (i.e., fixation disparity using polarized filters) and from a therapeutic standpoint (i.e., uses in therapy and yoked prism for example).

Myopia Management Strategies
Dr. Fallon Patel, BSc, OD

This presentation will explore effective strategies for myopia management with a focus on spectacle lens treatments that incorporate innovative technologies to control myopia progression. To ensure success, a detailed follow-up schedule, including initial, mid-term and annual visits to monitor adaptation, assess effectiveness and make any necessary adjustments, will be outlined. Additionally, this presentation will stress the importance of parent education, providing ongoing support and guidance on proper lens care, wearing schedule and lifestyle factors that impact myopia progression. By implementing these strategies and fostering strong communication with parents, opticians can play a vital role in managing myopia and safeguarding the vision of children for years to come.
