Simon Holland

MD, FRCSC, FRCOPH

Dr. Simon Holland is a Clinical Professor in the Cornea Division at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver. He is also the Research Director at the Pacific Laser Eye Clinic in Vancouver and the Chair of Orbis Canada. Dr. Holland was born and raised in Zimbabwe, where he completed his initial medical training. He graduated with Honors in Medicine and went on to complete an internal medicine residency in the UK in 1978, and an ophthalmology residency at UBC in 1982. He obtained specialty certification in Canada (FRCSC) and in the UK (FRCS) in 1982 and obtained American Board of Certification in 1984. From 1982 to 1986, Dr. Holland served as the first-ever Medical Director of Orbis's original DC-8 Flying Eye Hospital, after which he completed a fellowship and joined the Faculty in the Corneal and External Disease division at the University of Miami's Bascom Palmer Eye Institute 1986-9. This was followed by a Refractive Surgery fellowship at the Institute of Ophthalmology in London, UK. Dr. Holland has been a member of the faculty at UBC for corneal, cataract and refractive disorders since 1990. Dr. Holland's contributions include being Chair of the Canadian TASS Task Force, Co-Chair of the Canadian International and Public Health Committee and volunteering as a lecturer and external examiner for East African Ophthalmology College, in Moshi, Tanzania from 2006 to 2010. Research interests include therapeutic laser corneal surgery. During his career, Dr. Holland has received many awards and accolades, including: � Senior Honor and Achievement Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology � Dr. Garth Taylor Humanitarian Award from the Canadian Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery � Mentor of the Year Award from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada � Jan G.F.
