Sameh Fanous

MD, FRCSC

Dr. Sam Fanous earned his degree in Medicine in 1978 (University of Montreal) and ophthalmology in 1982. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and a Fellow of the American Board of Ophthalmology. His achievements include founder and medical director of The Montreal Eye Clinic (1982), founder and head of the Department of Ophthalmology, Valleyfield Hospital (1984), founder and head of the Department of Ophthalmology, Lachine Hospital (1990) and founder and medical director of the Montreal Eye Institute (2011). Dr. Fanous was the first ophthalmologist in Canada and Quebec to implant a foldable intraocular lens in cataract surgery (1989), perform cataract surgery without anesthetic injection or suture (1992), implant a multifocal intraocular lens in cataract surgery (1993), implant an intraocular contact lens (ICL) for myopic eyes (1998) and perform laser vision correction (LASIK) without the use of a surgical blade (2006). He has earned many honours including the American College of Eye Surgery for high level of excellence in cataract surgery (1999), the American College of Eye Surgery for high level of excellence in vision correction laser (LASIK) (2000), the Canadian Government for his outstanding medical achievements (2001), the city of St-Laurent for the creation of the Institute of Montreal Eye, best project of the year (2012), Medal Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II for his outstanding achievements in Canada by the Governor of Canada (2012) and recepient of the Canadian Ambassador's Award to recognize his outstanding achievements in Science (2016).
