Following a 25-year career in marketing and new business development, Karen started Opticalm in 2012 to bring products and services designed to help people with visual stress to her community. In 2015, she opened a dedicated visual stress clinic in Ottawa and in 2020, she received the sole rights to distribute the Intuitive Colorimeter medical instrument to Canadian eye care practices. Karen's inspiration came from helping her son Nico, who had suspected ADHD and learning difficulties, however, no medication or other suggestions would improve symptoms. Once she found out about visual stress and individually prescribed tinted lenses, her objective became to help other parents like her find solutions for their children. Her company has since helped over 1000 clients with post-concussion vision issues, learning disabilities, migraines and other neurological difficulties relieve their symptoms of light and pattern sensitivity, reading difficulties, vestibular issues, anxiety and perceptual distortions. Using their custom-tinted solutions, clients have reported increased tolerance of their visual environment, increased ability to read and focus, reduced vestibular issues and improved visual perception, leading to improved school, work and lives in general.
