PROGRAM AT A GLANCE
Multifocals: How We Got Here and Ideas For the Future
Dr. Jonathan Shapiro, BSc, FCOptom, FAAO, FEAOO
Multifocals and progressive addition lenses (PAL) were a radical shift in presbyopia correction. The glass bifocal was the accepted method of correction for over 100years. The first proposal of a PAL was in 1907, and the first commercial lenses were manufactured in the 1920s. With the advent of improved technology, the PAL became a realistic solution in the 1960s and today, it is the standard lens prescribed, pushing the bifocal into the background. This lecture looks at the development of these lenses from 1907 to 2010, with a limited discussion of their development from 2010 onwards.

Looking Out For Trouble When Fitting Multifocals
Dr. Jonathan Shapiro, BSc, FCOptom, FAAO, FEAOO
Multifocals are the most profitable of all dispensing lenses, but they carry a high rate of non-tolerance. Claims made by manufacturers of ‘perfect vision in all positions of gaze,’ are often not what the patient receives, leading to patient disappointment. This lecture discusses patient selection, special cases, fitting problem patients, what affects the lens design and what lens designers suggest.
