PROGRAM AT A GLANCE
Head and Facial Asymmetry: Dispensing Considerations
Dr. Jonathan Shapiro, BSc, FCOptom, FAAO, FEAOO
Much of the optometric examination and the dispensing process assume symmetry. Frames are manufactured to be symmetrical, lenses are glazed symmetrically, but humans are not symmetrical. This lecture will present an overview of why we are asymmetric, how it affects our visual process, how it affects our posture and how it complicates our lives as professionals. We will investigate why there are errors in manufacturing glasses that may result in less than 100% satisfaction felt by the patient. Some ideas are presented on how to overcome these problems and suggestions are made to enable the optician to adapt the given prescription and thus produce a more acceptable product for the patient.

Role of Contact Lenses in Pediatric Population
Dr. Manveen Bedi, OD, FAAO, FSLS
Contact lenses are an important tool intreating various eye conditions in children, such as amblyopia, refractive errors, myopia, aphakia and light sensitivity. They can be more effective than glasses in certain cases, offering better visual clarity and improved quality of life. There are different types of lenses available, including soft lenses, rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses and scleral lenses, each suited to specific needs. Specialized designs, such as orthokeratology or multifocal lenses for myopia control, allow for personalized care. This lecture will cover a variety of contact lens options, the fitting process and emphasize the importance of safety and hygiene practices to prevent infections, ensuring optimal outcomes for pediatric patients.
